About MSD

Thank you for your interest in the Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD).  MSD is in its second hundred years of educating Michigan’s Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.  She celebrated her 158th birthday this year.  MSD is located on a beautiful green campus on the southwest side of Flint, Michigan.  We have approximately 130 students currently enrolled.

MSD follows a school calendar of approximately 180 days for all students.  The educational program is similar in structure and sequence to that provided by public schools.  We adhere to the same Michigan Standards and Benchmarks as all Michigan public schools.  We also fully implement each IEP which places a student in our program.

Programming and services provided included:  certified teachers of the Deaf, excellent role models who are both Deaf and hearing, staff who are fluent in both American Sign Language (ASL) and English, residential living for those who live outside Genesee County, (50 mile radius) state mandated assessments, audiological services, transition services, functional living program, social work services, Deaf culture classes, Sign Language classes, health center staffed by registered nurses, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, auditory training, speech and language assessments.

After school and extra-curricular activities include football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, track, Junior Girl Scouts, Singing Hands, Drama Club, Yearbook and Close-Up.
