Tips of the Day

Whenever a question arises, or I remember a neat little trick that can make us more efficient, I send out an email to the everyone at MSD.  I will post those "Tips" here for everyone to see.

Does it sometimes drive you crazy that the computer automatically numbers for you and sets up the format that you don’t want or like for your numbered lists?  You can do it yourself by turning off the automatic numbering.

Go to Tools à AutoCorrect Options and then click on the AutoFormat As You Type tab.  In the “Apply as you type” section the first two options are “Automatic bulleted lists, and “Automatic numbered lists”.  Word has these predefined for formatting.  If you don’t want the computer to automatically do this when you start a bulleted list or numbered list, click in the box so the checkmark ü is not there.  This will stop the automatic formatting of numbered lists for you.  There are other options there that you can choose to keep or remove depending on your style.

How do you turn the alarm off on the calendar appointments permanently?

Go to Toolsà Options, and remove the checkmark from “Default reminder”.  If you want to have a reminder alarm on a specific appointment you can click the checkmark in the appointment itself at the time you create the appointment

Press down on the scroll wheel which “locks” it.  You will see the cursor change to a circle with an up and down pointing arrow.  The farther away you pull the mouse away from that icon the faster you will scroll; move the mouse closer to that icon and you will slow down.  You don’t need to touch the wheel again.

Sometimes on the Internet you need to “lock” the wheel with the mouse over the scroll bars.  If you want that scrolling icon to go away, just click on the scroll wheel again.

 Happy scrolling?

Did you know you can rename a file within a program rather than using Save As.  When you want to rename a file and you are in a program such as Word, or Excel, be sure the file you want to rename is not open.

Go to FileàOpen and when the dialog box opens, click on “Rename”  and then you can change the name from within the program.

If the file is open, you will get an error message.

You can also delete files from this window.  The file, of course, must be closed to delete it.

Did you know that you don’t need to highlight (select) a word to apply formatting.  If you click “in” the word the whole word will be formatted.  For example, click in a work and then click on the “B” Bold tool.  The word is now bold.  This will save a little extra work!

If you click anywhere in a paragraph the formatting will be applied to the whole paragraph.  This would be for such things as alignment, such as left, center, right, or justify.  It also works with increase or decrease indent.  , bullets, etc.  Anything you can do to a paragraph as a whole, you can do by just clicking in the paragraph; you don’t have to highlight the whole paragraph.

Ever get tired of browsing through a large amount of text either using the scroll bars on the side, or the scroll wheel?  Gets tiring doesn’t it.  It’s always a good way to get  carpal tunnel  Try this.
