Put this in the first column Like telephones, doorknobs, keyboards and mice are places where germs get transferred from one person to another. Researchers say keyboards and compute mice can be real health hazards. People do not wash their hands often enough and the germs are easily transferred from the hands to other surfaces where they can live up to 72 hours. People who eat at their computers are at risk. They use their hands to eat and if they do no wash their hands before and after a meal they can pick up germs and spread them. If people share equipment like computers in a school computer lab, or office, then these germs are easily moved from one person to another. Viruses are spread through the hands. Put this in the 2nd column Wiping down work areas with disinfectant wipes every day reduces bacteria significantly. The cleaning of keyboards, desk tops, and mice is rarely done by cleaning staffs as they do not want to move anything on a worker’s desk. A lot of people eat and spill food on their desks, and keyboards all the time so they basically turn into a bacteria cafeteria during the day, allowing the germs to multiply. Avoid eating near the computer or at your desk unless you are going to clean it thoroughly after eating. People do not wash their hands after they eat. They have probably put fingers in or near their mouths, and germs are left on their fingers The germs, then, are easily transferred to the keyboards after the meal. People do not wash their hands after they have been at a computer. Especially dangerous are computers that are used by others during the day. Put this in the 3rd column Use soap and hot water for 18 to 20 seconds as frequently as you can remember to do it. This is going to be your single most effective prevention tip this season. Don’t go to work or school if you are sick. Stay home until you are no longer able to spread your illness to someone else. Cover your mouth with your upper arm if you cough or sneeze without a tissue. This avoids transferring germs to your hand. Mom always said, “Cover your mouth”, and we did, with our hands. It is better to cover your mouth and nose with your arm Research has found that where office workers who were told to clean their keyboards, mice, and desks with disinfecting wipes, bacterial levels were reduced by 99%.
